Game Report

Game 1
Wednesday July 26, 2017.

Well last night was the start of the Alberta Junior A Final and for the 6th year in a row it was the most heated rivalry in Alberta lacrosse with our Raiders taking on the crosstown rival Mounties. It was the first game for our boys since the last installment against the Mounties exactly 3 weeks ago. Big shout out to the coaches who had the boys working hard during the downtime and they were able to come out firing on this beautiful summer night at Max Bell.

The first period started with the teams who are very familiar with each other still feeling the other out and it wasn’t till the 13:51 mark when Dylan Kinnear scored the first goal of the game and the final series. It was the beginning of a 4 goal run for our Raiders (McIntyre, Getz and Kinnear’s second) who saw some strong defensive play and good saves from Kevin Orleman to hold off the Mounties offense till the 5:25 mark when they stopped the run. Mounties scored another shortly after this, before the Raiders finished off the first period, scoring with a goal by Cam Wengreniuk and the boys took a 5-2 lead into the dressing room after one. Great start after a 3 week break!!

The second period was a sharp contrast from the first period where there were only 2 penalties handed out, to the second where the officials had a steady flow of Raiders to the box giving the Mounties a chance to tighten up the score. After Kade McCormick gave the home boys a 6-2 lead at 18:47 the Raiders were assessed 5 penalties in a row and the Mounties capitalized with 3 goals on the power play as well as an even strength goal to make it a 6-6 game. The teams then exchanged goals to end the period with Wengreniuk getting his second on the night and then a great transition play with Jett Leonard-Bedier finishing a great fast break with Harrison Matsuoka and Tyler Sceviour quickly moving the ball up the floor. Period two ended 8-7 for the Raiders and they went back to the room to regroup.

The third period saw the refs allow the boys some freedom to play again and the Raiders were flying. With 18:25 remaining Brett McIntyre (2017 Jr A Scoring Leader) started a run of 5 third period goals for the Raiders (Kinnear with hat trick, McCormick with a coupe for his hat trick and Captain Getz) to pull away from the Mounties. Again the D and Orleman were strong as the Mounties didn’t score till late with the goalie pulled for a 13-8 final and the Raiders taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

No time for the teams to rest as we are back at it with game 2 tonight July 27 8:30pm at the Bell. Hope to see everyone there cheering on the Raiders!!!
