Game 5 back in our home and a second chance for the boys to finish off our rival Mounties. Crazy night around the building as there was a concert being set up which created some parking issues for all the fans but they still made it out to support these two teams and the battle for the Provincial Title and a berth in the Minto Cup. Nothing would make it better than to punch our ticket to the Minto tonight in our building.
The first period started with both teams being somewhat tentative as this pivotal game began. But the Raiders were able to strike first when Zach Mantei, back in the line-up after being a scratch in game 4, scored at 15:36 of the period, his first of the playoffs, putting the Raiders on the board. After a big rookie campaign it was a relief to see him dent the twine. The teams went back forth in this tight first period as the boys got goals from Levi Anderson at 7:07 with a bullet to the top corner. Then Captain Travis Getz at 5:14 continued his playoff scoring streak scoring in every game. Finally with 1:58 left, Brett Craig on transition got a big goal and the boys headed to the dressing room with a 4-3 lead.
The second, which hasn’t been the Raiders best period, on this night was going to be crucial if the boys planned to finish the series off and get that Minto berth. And the boys looked to change their fortunes with a 3 goal run to start the period. The defense and transition game looked to be on point as at 16:18 Liam Patten scored his first as a Raider since being acquired at the trade deadline, on a great pass from the other deadline acquisition Kevin Orleman, which started the run. Brett McIntyre at 15:31 and Cam Wengreniuk at 12:16 gave the boys a 7-3 lead before the defense and Orleman finally surrendered one back just before the half way point of the period. The defense continued to play strong when only a power play goal was given up but at 3:32 McIntyre with his second gave the home side an 8-5 lead heading into the third. 20 minutes away from the Minto berth.
The third period had the Raiders pumped up to come out and finish off the series. The defense was especially strong in what could have been the strongest effort of the year as they did not allow the Mounties a goal until there was under 5 minutes left. Many of the possessions the Mounties didn’t even get a shot off in the 30 seconds and the Raiders forced many turnovers and strong saves by Orleman ensured the boys would not be denied. The Raiders final goal of the game came at 10:36 with Kade McCormick putting what ended up being the final nail in the coffin as the Raiders finished the game and series off with a 9-6 win.
THE RAIDERS ARE GOING TO THE MINTO CUP!!!!!
It was a very excited fan base and team as the final buzzer went and the team loaded on the floor to celebrate the win. In a very class act by the league our owner Christina Fehr was given the honor of presenting the team with their championship medals. It was a very emotional time for many as this meant so much to the team after losing our leader Dave Fehr earlier in the year. There is no question that Dave would have been looking down with a big grin on his face and a loud ‘F#*K YA’ would have been heard by all in heaven as his Raiders were going to the Minto!!!
The boys work is not done but they were able to celebrate a provincial championship on this night and are eager to show the rest of the country who they are!! Hope to see as many parents as possible in Brampton and the boys are focused and ready to go.
